Nodic style spread in the XX century in the north of Europe. It was born due to the need to face the lack of natural light during the long and peculiar scandivanian winters. The main characteristic of this style is the use of light and bright colors, and the creation of natural minimal spaces full of light. Another strong peculiarity of this trend are the research of clean and harmonious spaces. The order is essential.
Nordic style colors
The white, represents, without any doubt, the basis of nordic style. It is present in almost all the decorative elements: walls, forniture, pillows and even floor.
Pastel colors help to create huger and brighter spaces to the view, well mixed with elements made of different textiles, but always according to the neutral tone of grey, brown and black.
As already said, the brightness is essential in the nordic style. However, it doesn’t mean that we have to completely remove the color. Infact, it is posible to introduce a bit of color with some decorative items, such as pillows, blankets, mattresses and paintings. But remember to chose light and neutral colors!
The most favorite colors in a nordic style are:
· Grey. A color present in all its light versions. A neutral color that doesn’t obstruct the lightness of the room. Besides, it perfectly combines with all the others colors of the nordic style.
· Green. It gives to the room a sensation of nature and relax.
· Blue. All the light tones of blue are like the white color. They reflect natural lights and increase the brightness.
· Blush pink. It is the more common color in the nordic style because it represents elegance and lightness.
The wood: a must for the nordic style decoration
The wood, and above all the light wood, is a real must in the nordic style. It is able to spread a lot of heat, giving to the room a natural look and creating a sensation of comfort. For this reason it is used everywhere, forniture, floors and walls. It is a natural element able to create the good atmosphere in your house.
As regards as the forniture of the nordic style, the most common are the functional minimal pieces. The mix between white and wood is the main protagonist in these kind of decorations and styles. However, it doesn’t mean a total lack of other colors and materials.
Nordic style suitable materials
Mixing in the same decoration different materials is another characteristic of the nordic style. For example it is posible to mix plastic chairs with wooden chairs. In this way your house will look modern and sophisticated. Even if light wood, such as beech and birch, is the most common, you can also use other materials like metal or plastic. Just pay attention to use them sparingly. Also try to put in your room same bronze or gold details!
Nordic style decoration is based also on the use of items originated from natural materials. You can chose interior plants or natural fibers, such as linen, wool and cotton, or why not osier baskets or bamboo lamp.
Carpet also are very important. Usually it is advisable use neutral colors, and easy geometrical decorations: triangles, stripes, circles or rhoumbus. They are the perfect choise for the floor.
Brightness: the secret of the nordic style
As we already said...the brightness is the secret of the success of nordic style decoration. It is important to let the natural light enter, so take off curtains and enjoy the light from the outside.
But if you can not live without curtains you can always chose basic see-through curtains, with a neutral color (white, beige, grey). They are almost invisible and makes the room brighter and enjoyable. Besides, you can also introduce a lamp, according to the colors of the nordic style.
